On the day that should have been her happiest—her birthday, Ryu Jeongha’s life ends in the worst way possible. After being sexually harassed by her store manager, chased by a mysterious old woman, and finally killed in a truck accident, Jeongha believes everything is over. But when she opens her eyes again, she finds herself in what looks like… a historical drama set. Except it isn’t a set. It’s another world. Before she can even process what’s happening, she’s told she must report to the imperial palace the very next day. “Am I… becoming a palace maid?” “A palace maid? What nonsense. You’re a woman destined to become a future Empress.” In this world, women rule the empire, and men become consorts in the imperial harem. The throne isn’t inherited, several candidates known as "future Empress" must compete in a brutal contest, and only the final victor will ascend as Emperor. Just then, Jeongha recalls the strange old woman’s words: “Is there any law that says a woman cannot become Emperor?” Before she knows it, Ryu Jeongha is thrown into a deadly battle for the imperial throne. Can she survive the ruthless competition, claim victory… and somehow find her way back to her original world? Welcome to Empress Garden, a dazzling world of powerful empresses, dangerous palace politics, and breathtakingly beautiful male consorts.
