Evelyn had been sold into a count’s household by force, living under the neglect and deception of a husband old enough to be her father. The only world she was allowed was the one inside her canvas, the four-cornered frame of her paintings. Then one day, an unwelcome visitor enters the life she had spent hidden away in her studio—her only refuge. Jay, the son brought to the estate by her husband’s mistress, who shamelessly roams the manor. From the very boy she should have despised most, Evelyn feels, for the first time in her life, the fierce beat of her heart. In the end, unable to resist her growing curiosity, she captures Jay on her canvas—only to be caught by him as he notices her stolen gaze. “As for that painting… is that really how I look in your eyes?” It was an invitation toward ruin, and at the same time, the first saving hand she had ever encountered in her life.
